Statement about leadership
The LGBTI+ community, like all communities with protected characteristics, are looking for political leadership which builds respect and equality. We urge our major parties to be mindful of pursuing wider partnerships with organisations which have a track record of destabilising our achievements.
Redbridge Rainbow Community provides friendship and support to LGBTI+ people living in the Redbridge area. We know, from our work in the community, that national politics shapes the lives of day to day lives of LGBTI+ people. We see and hear first-hand the joy that can be obtained through achievements such as the recognition of same-sex marriage but also the terrible isolation that can result from hostile attitudes.
When politicians forge relationships with political parties that have espoused homophobic attitudes, it negatively re-sets the conversation about equality, casts a shadow of doubt in the minds of people, disperses misinformation and inflames hate crime, workplace discrimination and bullying.
Our LGBTI+ community - young people, families and individuals - deserve to be listened to. Redbridge Rainbow Community calls on the local council and the government to ensure the theLGBTI+ community receive the same rights and respect deserved by all communities.
